A New Era for BGMI Esports
The Indian esports scene is about to enter a transformative phase. During an episode of TalkEsport’s OnPoint with DPK, Karan Pathak, Associate Director of Esports at Krafton India, revealed that transfer seasons for Battlegrounds Mobile India teams will officially begin in October. This system, widely used in traditional sports, will now become a core part of competitive gaming in India, ensuring more accountability and structure for players, teams, and tournament organizers.
How Transfer Seasons Will Work
According to Krafton, there will be two transfer seasons every year, each lasting six months. The first window will run from October to March and cover major events like the Battlegrounds Mobile India Series along with several third party tournaments. The second will begin in April and continue until September, aligning with flagship competitions such as Battlegrounds Mobile Pro Series, BGMI Masters Series, Skyesports Championship, and the Upthrust tournament. These fixed windows will allow teams to make roster changes in an organized manner. Players and organizations who fail to follow the rules will not be eligible to compete in official or third party tournaments.
Rankings and Global Standards
One of the biggest highlights of this new structure is the introduction of a live leaderboard that tracks team rankings on a global scale. Pathak explained that the system has been in development for a long time and has already been tested successfully. The idea is to ensure that rankings are not just numbers on a website but a true reflection of performance and compliance. By bringing in this standardized system, Krafton is aligning BGMI esports with international practices, giving Indian teams a transparent pathway to measure their progress.
Managing Esports at Scale
While fans may only recognize the top dozen teams, Pathak reminded the community that the competitive ecosystem is massive. Nearly 300,000 to 400,000 teams participate at various levels, making the introduction of a structured transfer system both challenging and necessary. By standardizing player movements and enforcing accountability, Krafton aims to support not just the big names but also the thousands of grassroots teams that make up the foundation of Indian esports.
