The Xbox Games Showcase 2025 kicked off with a surprising announcement from Focus Entertainment and Asobo Studio. A new chapter in the beloved Plague Tale universe has been revealed, titled Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. This upcoming game is not a direct sequel but a spin off that explores the origins of a key character from the series and takes the franchise in a bold new direction.

Resonance is set fifteen years before the events of A Plague Tale: Requiem. This time, players will follow a younger version of Sophia, the smuggler who helped Amicia and Hugo on their journey in the second mainline game. The setting is the enigmatic Minotaur’s Island, a place filled with ancient secrets and haunted by a dark force. The story weaves through two different timelines, one rooted in the Middle Ages and another in the time of Ancient Minoa, creating a narrative where choices made in one era affect the outcome in the other.

What truly sets Resonance apart from its predecessors is the gameplay shift. While previous Plague Tale games focused heavily on stealth and puzzle solving, this title leans more into action. Sophia will have access to intuitive combat mechanics as she faces off against a terrifying, unkillable force. Echoes of the original Macula threat return in a new form, giving players a fresh yet familiar taste of the franchise’s haunting tone.

The trailer teased an atmosphere packed with tension, mystery, and historical richness. Sophia appears to be hunted by a supernatural enemy that echoes the dread of the rat swarms from earlier entries, though this time with a far more combat heavy twist.

Asobo Studio’s Chief Creative Officer, David Dedeine, explained that this game allowed the team to expand the universe in a different direction while keeping the emotional depth and thematic weight intact. With new locations, a dynamic timeline mechanic, and a deeper combat experience, Resonance is designed to stand on its own while remaining deeply connected to the world fans love.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is scheduled to release in 2026 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. It will also be available from day one on Xbox Game Pass, making it accessible to a wider audience right at launch.
