Mario Kart World has brought a colorful evolution to the classic kart racing formula. This time, the thrill of drifting and power ups is joined by a whole new customization system filled with stylish character outfits. With more than 50 racers and nearly 200 costumes, the game turns every race into a fashion show on wheels.

Whether you’re zipping through the streets as Peach or tearing up the track as Wario, there’s an outfit waiting to be discovered. But unlocking them takes a bit more than just winning races. The real key lies in a fun collectible called Dash Food.

Dash Food is a bright orange in game item that serves both as a boost and a way to unlock costumes. It shows up throughout races and in the game’s Free Roam Mode. Players can find it along the sides of the track, especially near in game food stalls and restaurants themed around Yoshi and other Nintendo favorites. Grabbing it mid race might take a bit of a detour, but the reward is well worth the risk.

In Free Roam Mode, players can explore the open world at their own pace. This mode is slower but ideal for those looking to track down specific types of Dash Food without worrying about racing rivals. Since each Dash Food collectible is tied to a different regional cuisine, the outfits you unlock will reflect that theme. Pick up a ramen themed Dash Food item, and your racer might appear in a noodle shop inspired outfit.

Not every Dash Food bag unlocks a costume. Some only give speed boosts, depending on the size of the food platter collected. While most core characters like Mario, Luigi, and Toad have a wide range of unlockable outfits, secondary characters like Goombas or Penguins won’t change appearances. They still receive the speed perks, but without the cosmetic upgrades.

Each playable character comes with at least one alternate outfit by default. As you gather more Dash Food, the wardrobe expands. Top tier characters can unlock as many as ten different looks. These changes are purely visual and do not impact gameplay performance or stats.

For those who prefer a consistent look during races, there’s an option to disable automatic outfit changes. Players can visit the game’s settings, locate the Dash Food toggle, and switch off outfit transformations while still retaining the boost effect. This gives players control over how their racer looks without sacrificing performance.

Mario Kart World has turned collecting outfits into a core part of the fun, blending racing with exploration and visual variety. With hundreds of costumes available and more likely to arrive in future updates, there’s always something new to chase on the track.
